Sections: All sections are on Tuesday. Section is a valuable time for students to get help with homework and midterms from the TA. While attendance is not required it is strongly recommended. Preferably you should go to the section which you are enrolled, you may (at the discretion of the TA) attend other section. Since work is frequently handed back in section, it is strongly suggested that you attend the same section each week, and indicate that section time on handed-in work.
Homework: Homeworks will be assigned on a weekly basis. The assignments will be posted online. Homework must be turned in by 2:50PM on Friday. You can turn homework in either in class, during the Friday office hours, or at any time earlier in the week (e.g., during section). No late homework assignments will be accepted, but the two lowest homework scores will be dropped.
Students should first attempt to complete the homework assignments by themselves and then seek outside help (i.e., other students, the TA, the professor or the calc lab) for any problems they are not able to complete. Students are expected to write up the problems by themselves; copying others' work is not acceptable.
Textbook: Calculus, fourth edition, by Deborah Hughes-Hallett (Note: The "Single Variable" paperback version suffices for Math 10A and 10B; the full hardcover version is appropriate if you will be taking Math 10A, 10B, and 10C.). The course will cover parts of chapters 1, 2, 3 and 4; a full schedule of planned topics by section number is given on the course calendar.
Calculators: A scientific calculator will be useful in doing some of the homework problems. Calculators will not be permitted on exams.
Calc lab: The Calculus Tutoring Lab is located in AP&M B402A. The lab has tutors available most daytime hours to help with homework and understanding. Students are strongly encouraged to use the lab for help in completing homework. (Note there are many tutors that work in the lab so you might want to try going at different times to find the tutor that you are most compatible with.)
Exams: There will be two midterms and one final for the course. (For the date of the exams consult the course calendar.) The midterms will be given during class on their scheduled dates. You may bring one 8.5 by 11 inch handwritten sheet of notes with you to the examinations.
Exams must be taken during the scheduled times. There will be NO makeup exams with the exception of medical emergencies or university approved absences.
Grades: The course grade will be determined by the cumulative percentage of scores at the end of the quarter. This is calculated by taking the BETTER of the two schemes:
  • 10% Homework, 25% Midterm 1, 25% Midterm 2, 40% Final
  • 10% Homework, 25% Best midterm, 10% Worst midterm, 55% Final
Students who get 90+ cannot get below an A-, students with 80+ cannot get below a B-, and students with 70+ cannot get below a C-. Grading criteria beyond these guidlines are at the sole jurisdiction of the instructor, and may include recentering or renormalization of grades as circumstances dictate.
Cheating: Academic dishonesty, including but not limited to cheating and plagiarism, is considered a serious academic offense. Consequences may range from reduction of grade to expulsion. It's unpleasant for all involved, so out of respect for yourself, your classmates, and the instructional faculty, please act ethically.
