Statistical Methods in Bioinformatics

DESCRIPTION:
This is a one quarter introduction to applications of Probability and
Statistitistics in Bioinformatics. It is one of the core courses
in the Graduate Bioinformatics Program.
REQUIRED MATERIALS:
Textbook:
Warren J. Ewens and Gregory R. Grant,
Statistical Methods in Bioinformatics: An Introduction,
Second Edition,
(c) 2005.
Use the UCSD network to download the
online edition.
This is currently available via the UCSD library's SpringerLink
subscription, but beware that UCSD has cancelled publisher
subscriptions in the past. If you prefer a physical book, the website
includes a link to purchase a printed softcover version for $24.99,
and the regular hardcover version may be special ordered at the
bookstore.
Slides: Class slides are posted on the Calendar page of the class website.
Computer resources: Homework assignments include problems that
are geared towards Matlab, R, or other mathematical/statistical
software. See the
Software page of the class website.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
Weekly homework, one midterm, one final.
Your composite grade is comprised of homework (30% for all homeworks
combined), the midterm (30%), and the final (40%).
Homework: Homework assignments
will be posted on the class website
and are due in class on Wednesdays or
as otherwise directed.

date, and assignment number at the top of the first page.
- Show your work, and when relevant, circle your final answer.

Please staple the pages together.

Unless otherwise directed,
you may study with others, but the work you turn in should be your own;
do not just copy someone else's answer.
Exams: There will be
one midterm (Wednesday November 6 in class)
and one final (Friday December 13, 3-6 p.m.).
They will be comprehensive.
Rules and material covered on each exam will be
announced the prior week.
ACCOMODATIONS:
Students with special needs or disabilities must provide the instructor with an Authorization for Accommodation (AFA) letter issued by the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) in the first week of class, or as soon as possible if the situation arises later.
