Course Description
-
The standard problems whose numerical solution we will study are systems of linear
equations, least squares problems, eigenvalue problems, and singular value problems. Techniques
for dense and sparse problems will be covered; it is impossible to cover these areas comprehensively,
but students should still come to appreciate many state-of-the-art techniques and recognize when
to consider applying them. We will also learn basic principles applicable to a variety of numerical
problems, and apply them to the four standard problems.
-
Prerequisite
- Consent by Instructor.
Textbook
-
Applied Numerical Linear Algebra by J. Demmel, published by SIAM, 1997.

Exams
-
There will be two midterm exams and one final exam in this class.
-
Midterm I, in class, 10/20/2022
-
Midterm II, in class, 11/17/2022
-
Final, 3:00-6:00pm, 12/05/2022
Grading
-
This course is mainly for preparation of
qualifier exam on numerical analysis.
Qual-purpose students need to choose the letter grade option.
The final course grades will be based on the performance
of homework assignments and exams. The grading rule is:
Homework Asssignments (20%) +
Midterm I (20%) +
Midterm II (20%) +
Final exam (40%).
Non-qual purpose students can choose to take no exams
(still need to do homework)
but the grading option must be P/NP.
OSD Accomodation and Academic Integrity
-
OSD students need to contact the instructor
with verification documents. They may need to take
exams with accomodations and
with different (equivalent) sets of questions.
-
Every student is expected to conduct themselves with academic integrity.
Any kind of cheatings is not allowed in this course.
Violations of academic integrity will be treated seriously.
