Course Description

Convergence of sequences, multivariate Taylor series.
Bisection and related methods for
nonlinear equations in one variable.
Newton's methods for nonlinear equations in one and many variables.
Unconstrained optimization and
Newton's method. Equality-constrained optimization, Kuhn-Tucker theorem.
Inequality-constrained optimization. Experience of Matlab
recommended.

Assignments

Assignments will be assigned regularly. The due dates and time (in PDT)
are stated in each assignment. Please write your names, id nubmers,
and section numbers on your assignments.
No late homework will be accepted for any reasons.
The lowest grade of assignments will be droped.
All assignments need to be submitted through Gradescope.
Calculators
-
Calculators are allowed for completing homework assignments and exam questions.
However, all necessary computational steps need to be shown in submitted solutions.
No credits will be given to answers that have no supporting reasoning.
Exams

There will be two midterm exams and one final.
The exam rule will be announced before each exam.

Make-up exam policy
-
There will be no make-up exams for this couse. If a midterm exam is missing,
then the other midterm will count. If the final exam is missing,
then this course cannot be passed.
Grading

The final course grade will be based on homework assignments,
two midterms and the final exam.
Your final grade will be based on the following weighted averages.

20% Homework, 40% of the better one of two Midterms, 40% Final Exam.
Academic Integrity

All students are expected to conduct themselves with academic integrity.
Any kind of cheatings is not allowed.
There are careful, serious checking of potential cheatings for all
submissions.
To prevent academic cheatings, the students may be requested
to explain or even repeat what they have done in the submitted assignments or exams.
They may also be possibly requested to re-take different (but mathematically equivalent)
questions for assignments or exams.
Violations of academic integrity will be treated seriously.
All suspected academci dishonest activities will be reported to
the integrity office for further serious investigation,
possibly wihtout notice to the suspected students.

The students are welcome to report any kind of suspicious academic dishonesty
to the introuctor or TAs or other equivalent school staff.
The reporting can be done anonymously, in email, phone, medial communication,
or any other private ways. The privacy will be strictly kept.
