We appreciate your interest in our graduate program here in the Department of Mathematics at UC San Diego!
For doctorate degrees, we offer a Ph.D. in Mathematics allowing study in any area of mathematics (encompassing Pure Mathematics and Applied Mathematics), a Ph.D. in Mathematics with a Specialization in Computational Science, and a Ph.D. in Mathematics with a Specialization in Statistics.
For master degrees, we offer a M.A in Pure Mathematics, a M.A. in Applied Mathematics, and a M.S. in Statistics. Admission decisions for all degree programs are made separately.
Admission to the graduate program is managed through the Department of Mathematics and the Graduate Division. We accept applications for the Fall quarter only.
Departmental support is only offered to Ph.D. students, which typically includes a Teaching Assistantship each academic year as well as full Tuition and Fee Scholarships. This is guaranteed for five years as long as a student is in good academic standing and fulfills all teaching responsibilities satisfactorily. There will be no changes to this policy as long as funds remain available.
For admission to the graduate programs, a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics is recommended or a strong background in mathematics with a minimum GPA of 3.0 required. A year's sequence in both upperdivision algebra and real analysis is strongly encouraged.
The following GRE Tests are required for all applicants:
The GRE General Test is required to apply to all degree programs.
The GRE Math Subject Test is required to apply to the M.A. in Pure Mathematics, the M.A. in Applied Mathematics, and the Ph.D. in Mathematics programs.
For the M.S. in Statistics program, the requirement for the GRE Math Subject Test may be waived if you will have completed an undergraduate degree in either Pure Mathematics or Applied Mathematics by the time you start at UCSD. However, if your undergraduate degree is not in either Pure Mathematics or Applied Mathematics, you must submit a GRE Math Subject Test score.
Your undergraduate degree must specifically be in Pure Mathematics or Applied Mathematics to waive the GRE Math Subject Test requirement. Subdisciplines that could be considered applied math (such as Statistics, Accounting, Actuarial Math, Financial Math, Economics, Information Management, etc.) will not waive the GRE Math Subject Test requirement.
There is no required minimum score for the GRE General Test or the GRE Math Subject Test.
The TOEFL or IELTS test is required for all international applicants:
The minimum required score for the TOEFL is 550 for the paper based test (PBT) or 80 for the Internet based test (iBT). The minimum required score for the IELTS is Band Score 7.
The school code to send GRE and TOEFL scores is 4836.
Please send official IELTS scores to:

The application fee is:
Only applications with all of the following documents uploaded will be reviewed NO EXCEPTIONS :

Candidates applying to the Ph.D. in Mathematics with a Specialization in Computational Science (CSME), must select "Computational Science" in the "Current Area of Interest" section of their online application (this means the person is applying to the Specialization in Computational Science degree).
The GRE Math Subject Test should be taken no later than October and the GRE General Test should be taken no later than December in order for scores to be reviewed by the Admissions Committee.
Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
