2x2 Linear Systems:   Math 20D Supplement   (to replace Chapter 7 of Boyce & DiPrima's book)

Textbook and Homework Information

You can use either of two books for this course:

You have two options for homework in this class:
  1. Online Homework: WileyPLUS.  If you prefer to do online homework, you may do so through WileyPLUS. The book by Boyce and DiPrima comes with a WileyPLUS access code. (You must buy the book from the bookstore or directly from Wiley.) If you choose this option, your homework score will be determined by online homework assignments based on exercises taken from Elementary Differential Equations by Boyce and DiPrima. This book is available as a "binder-ready looseleaf" or as a web-book. (This text cannot be obtained as a bound book or as an ebook.)

  2. Offline Homework: Gradescope.  If you prefer to do your homework the old fashioned way (with a pen and paper), then you may take this option instead. Homework assignments based on exercises from the book by Jiri Lebl are posted on the Offline Homework Page. Students who chose this option will upload their completed homework assignments to Gradescope. (Assignments must be scanned or typed and saved as a PDF file. Instructions are given on the Offline Homework Page.) This book is available for free as a PDF from the author's website. Physical (bound) copies of the book may be obtained from the bookstore (or from online sellers, such as Amazon).
In either method, the total number of points for each assignment will be added together and divided by the total number of points available in order to obtain a percentage score. (The total number of points available will be different for each method, so the scores will be converted to percentages at the end of the quarter.) Students may choose either homework method. If a student chooses to submit both "online" and "offline" homework, then the highest percentage of the two will be used. (It is not possible to combine the two methods. Only the method giving the higher percentage will be used.)

It is not necessary for students to specify their choice. The higher percentage score will be used automatically.

Exam Information

All midterm exams will be "in-class" and will last 45 minutes.

  • Exam 1: Oct 23 (Mon) — Topics included are those from Oct 2 - Oct 18.
  • Exam 2: Nov 20 (Mon) — The focus will be on topics from Oct 20 - Nov 15.

Final Exam: Dec 13 (Wed, 3:00-5:59pm) — The final exam is cumulative and covers every topic from the course.

  • You must bring your photo ID.
  • You may not use a calculator or other electronic device.
  • You may use one 8.5 x 11 inch page of handwritten notes. (Both sides are okay, but no photocopies are allowed.)
  • You may not use any other notes or books.

Links to old Math 20D exams appear below. The following exams are provided "as is"—exactly as they appeared when administered and without answers. These are NOT practice exams. They may differ in form and content from the exams given this term. Working through these old exams may be helpful, but it is not a substitute for reviewing your notes, homework, and keeping up with the class on a daily basis.
