Math 200C: Algebra III (Spring 2024)

The policies below will continue to be updated until the quarter starts; they might also be updated during the quarter if UCSD and local authorities update their regulations.

Course description

Instructor: Alina Bucur (alina at math dot ucsd dot edu), APM 7151

Lectures: MWF 1-1:50pm, APM B402A

Office hours: M 2-3pm in APM 7218 (in person)
Tu 2-3pm via Zoom (see Zulip for link)

TA: Nathan Wenger (nwenger at ucsd dot edu)
TA office hours: Tu, Th 12-1pm in HSS 5029

Books: Dummit and Foote, Abstract Algebra third edition (for Galois theory) mostly because it was used in 200B, but I plan to mostly ignore it.
Morandi, Field and Galois theory again for Galois theory and mostly because it was used in 200B.
M. Atiyah and I.G. MacDonald, Introduction to Commutative Algebra (the main textbook for the commutative algebra part). The bookstore carries it, but you might find better priced copies elsewhere. Online shopping is your friend.
Another good and more verbose reference, especially for people interested in arithmetic/algebraic geometry, is Eisenbud's Commutative Algebra: with a View Toward Algebraic Geometry.

Prerequisites:
MATH 200AB or consent of the instructor

Grading: The grade will be based entirely on homework. I will drop your lowest score assignment; except the last two assignments cannot be dropped and will be worth more.
You are encouraged to talk to each other, the TA, the instructor, other graduate students, but you must write your own solutions in your own words. Same goes for other sources of inspiration, e.g. books or online material, as long as you disclose the source in your writeup.
Communication: Most communication about the course will take place in Zulip; Zulip includes both a general discussion forum, available to all students, and one-on-one direct messages. A link to join Zulip will be posted to Canvas. Once you have joined, please use DMs instead of email for questions about the course; I may not answer emails as they have sometimes get lost. All course communication is subject to UCSD's academic integrity and harassment policies.
