Announcements:

03/11: The final exam will cover Sections 3.5, 4.1-4.7, 5.1-5.5, and 6.1-6.2 from the textbook.

02/06: The midterm exam (in class, Tuesday, February 13th) will cover Section 3.5 and Sections 4.1-4.7 from the textbook.

01/17: We will be having two make-up lectures, as follows:

• Monday, February 5th, from 5-6:20pm in Central Hall 217B

01/17: The lectures on Tuesday, January 30th, and Thursday, February 1st, are cancelled.

Welcome to Math 240B!

Prerequisites: Math 140A-B-C.

Course description: Second course in a three-quarter graduate sequence on real analysis. Topics covered include point set topology, functional analysis, L^p spaces.

Textbook: Gerald B. Folland, Real Analysis: Modern Techniques and Applications, 2nd edition, Wiley, 1999. We will cover most of chapters 4-6 and section 3.5.

Homework: Homework will be assigned most weeks. Homework is due at the beginning of the class of the due date. There will be a total of nine problem sets and you should attempt to complete all of them. If, for any reason, you cannot turn in a homework assignment, keep in mind that the lowest score will be dropped.

Midterm Exam: There will be one in-class midterm on Tuesday, February 13, 2018.

Final exam: The final exam is scheduled for Thursday, March 22, 2018, 8:00am-11:00am. The final exam will be cumulative.

Grading: Your final score will be calculated according to the following scheme:
20% Homework + 30% Midterm + 50% Final Exam

Policy: No late homework will be accepted and no rescheduled or make-up exams will be allowed unless a written verification of a valid excuse (such as hospitalization, family emergency, religious observance, court appearance, etc.) is provided.
