Math 100C: Abstract Algebra (Spring 2013)


This is last quarter in the MATH 100ABC sequence, the rigorous introduction to abstract algebra in which concepts and proofs are emphasized more than techniques. Our main goal is to understand Galois theory, but we will also cover some parts of Chapter 7.

Required text: Abstract Algebra by John Beachy and William Blair, Third Edition

Homework: Assigned weekly, due Wednesday by 5pm in the relevant homework box located in the basement of AP&M.

Quiz: Wednesday, April 24, in class

Midterm exam: Friday, May 10, in class

Final exam: Monday, June 10, 8-11am, HSS 1305. Please note that by signing up for this course, you are agreeing to sit for the final examination at this date and time.

Grading: 25% homework, 10% quiz, 25% midterm, 40% final exam.

Homework: You are encouraged to work on these problem sets with a small group of other students in the class, but every student should write up his or her own solutions.
