Course:  Math 20E

Title:  Vector Calculus

Prerequisite:  Math 20C (or Math 21C) or Math 31BH or equivalent with a grade of C- or better

Catalog Description:  Change of variable in multiple integrals, Jacobian, Line integrals, Green's theorem. Vector fields, gradient fields, divergence, curl. Spherical/cylindrical coordinates. Taylor series in several variables. Surface integrals, Stoke's theorem. Conservative fields.

Textbook:  Vector Calculus, sixth edition, by Jerrold E. Marsden and Anthony J. Tromba.

Subject Material:  We will cover parts of chapters 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 of the text.

Lecture:  Attending the lecture is a fundamental part of the course; you are responsible for material presented in the lecture whether or not it is discussed in the textbook. You should expect questions on the exams that will test your understanding of concepts discussed in the lecture.

Reading:  Reading the sections of the textbook corresponding to the assigned homework exercises is considered part of the homework assignment; you are responsible for material in the assigned reading whether or not it is discussed in the lecture. You should expect questions on the exams that will test your understanding of concepts addressed in the reading and assigned homework exercises.

Clickers:  In order to facilitate communication, we will be using the iClicker 2 classroom response system. You should bring your clicker to every lecture (TTh). Your clicker score will be based partly on participation and partly on the number of correct answers. You will usually have an opportunity in class to revise your answer to clicker questions based on dis- cussions with your classmates. Thus, it will be very bene cial to your grade to come prepared for class and to talk with your classmates when prompted.

Calculators:  You may use any handheld calculator (but not a computer, PDA or any device with network capability; no device that has internal or external memory or hard-drive on which material can be stored) during exams; however, you will be expected to show all relevant computational steps. No credit will be given for unsupported answers gotten directly from a calculator.

Homework:  Homework will be assigned weekly on the course homework page. A representative sample of the exercises will be graded. Please observe the following neatness guidelines for homework that you turn in to be graded; homework not conforming to these guidelines will not receive full credit and may not be graded at all. Moreover, you will receive 1 point for following these guideliness and turning in a neat assignment.

The two lowest homework scores will be dropped. Late homework will not be accepted. You should make every effort to complete the homework assignments and seek help with problems you have not been able to solve.

Quizzes:  in discussion section on Th 10/3, 10/17, 10/31, 11/14. The lowest quiz grade will be dropped. There will be no makeup quizzes. You have to take the quizzes in the section you are registered for.
The quiz on 10/17 will be longer and will count as half of your quiz grade. This will be your most serious feedback before the UCSD deadline to drop the class without a 'W'.

Midterm Exam:  There will be one midterm exam given during the lecture hour. See the course calendar for the date. You may bring one 8.5 by 11 inch handwritten sheet of notes with you to each midterm exam; no other notes (or books) will be allowed. There will be no makeup exams.

Final Examination:  The final examination will be held on Thursday, December 12, 8-11am, location TBD. Please note that by signing up for this course, you are agreeing to sit for the final examination at the scheduled date and time. You may bring one 8.5 by 11 inch handwritten sheet of notes with you to the final examination; no other notes (or books) will be allowed.

Grading: Your cumulative average will be the best of the following two weighted averages.

In addition, you must pass the final examination in order to pass the course. Note: Since there are no makeup exams, if you miss the midterm for any reason then your course grade will be computed with the final exam counting 65% of your weighted average.
The actual "curve" for grade bands will be determined only at the end of the term, with the median corresponding to a B-/C+.

TED: I will use TED for posting grades and managing the iClicker system. It is your responsibility to make sure that you are registered on TED, that your iClicker2 remote is registered and that all your scores are posted correctly all throughout the term. No other information will be posted on TED, everything can be found on the course webpage.

Regrade Policy:  Homework and midterm exams will be returned in the discussion sections. If you believe there might be an error in the grading and wish to have your homework or exam regraded, you must observe the following rules:

  1. Return your homework or exam immediately to your TA. Regrade requests will not be considered once the homework or exam leaves the room.
  2. Retrieve your homework or exam during discussion section or arrange to pick it up from your TA within one week after it was made available for pickup (i.e., returned) in section. In order to be considered, regrade requests must be submitted within one week after being returned in section.

Tutorial services:  The Office of Academic Support and Instructional Services (OASIS) will offer weekly workshops for Math 20E on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12-1:50pm starting the second class week. Acommodation:  Students with special needs or disabilities must provide me with an Authorization for Accommodation (AFA) letter issued by the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) as soon as possible.

Academic Dishonesty:  Academic dishonesty is considered a serious offense at UCSD. Students caught cheating will face an administrative sanction which may include suspension or expulsion from the university.
