Homework
Math 20C Fall 2014
Lecture A

The homework will account for 15% of your grade.

Online homework

It will be assigned (more or less) weekly, to be submitted by 5am on the due date (generally on Thursdays).
We will use the online system WebWork. To login, use your Active Directory (i.e. ACMS) username and password.

If you don't know your ACMS account password or need to reset it, follow the instructions below.

  1. Go to "http://acms.ucsd.edu/"
  2. Click on "Account Lookup" on the left sidebar.
  3. In the "If you do not know your account name:" section, fill in the "Your Last Name:" and "Your Student PID" fields and click the "Submit Query" button.
  4. It should then show you the correct ACMS account username to use.
  5. The next webpage after that should have a link to "Change your Password" and you can follow the prompts there (may take 15 minutes or so to update).

If you need more help than that, please go to the ACMS Helpdesk on the 1st Floor of AP&M during business hours (8am-4:30pm).

All homework must be completed by the due date. Answers will be made available after the due date, so no late submissions will be accepted.

You are encouraged to discuss the homework with your colleagues, but remember that everyone gets a slightly different version of each problem.

You are expected to do additional problems from the book on your own until you understand the material.

Using WeBWorK

Here are a few pointers about using the online hw server.

  • On the main screen, click on a problem set, e.g., "HW1", "HW2", etc., to start it. Or select the button next to it and click on "Download PDF ..." to print it out. Be sure to do the problem sets for all sections due each week.
  • Be sure to use the "Preview Button" to see exactly how your entry looks. E.g., to tell the difference between 1+2/3+4 and [1+2]/[3+4], click the "Preview Button". After you are satisfied with how your answer looks, click the "Submit Answers" button.
  • Many questions allow you to give answers in terms of functions (with numbers plugged in). See the list of functions available in WeBWorK. E.g., the length of the vector <1,2> may be entered as sqrt(5). Or, you may evaluate it on a calculator, as long as you give enough significant digits (usually at least 4).
  • There is no time limit on individual problems, but all problems must be completed by the deadline (Thurdays 5:00am, unless otherwise announced).
  • You can skip whole problems and return to them later. If a problem has multiple parts, you should complete all parts before submitting that problem.
  • If you are inactive for too long, the system may automatically log you out; just login again to continue. This is a website security feature, not a time limit on answering the problems for credit.
  • Most of the time, each student will have a different version of each question.
If you need more help than this, try the Help button on the site, or the wiki.

Pen-and-paper homework

On exams you will be required to show your work, not just give the final answer. In order to help with this aspect of your learning, I will post a list of problems to help with understanding the material, going over in discussion section and office hours, and preparing for exams. I suggest you write down solutions for them, as you would on a test, but do not turn them in!
