Our son shares a name with a figure from Irish legend. The name (pronounced "fyahn") means "fair-haired", which our Fionn certainly isn't (yet?).

Some fine bits of the Fionn mac Cumhail legend, that we learned after picking the name:
  • Thanks to a boyhood accident involving the salmon of knowledge, when Fionn sucked his thumb it gave him knowledge.
  • To fool the dread giant Angus, twice Fionn's size, Fionn dressed up in huge baby clothes pretending to be Fionn's baby. Seeing him, Angus decided that the father must be huge, and fled.
  • Fionn slew the dread monster Aillen!
  • day 6 in the plaster cast of Sofia's pregnant belly already raising his head day 7

Fionn's birthday is Guy Fawkes Day; indeed, he was born on the four hundredth anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot.

The girl's name "Fiona", invented in the 18th century, is derived from Fionn. The traditional feminine forms of Fionn are Fionnseach, Fionnait and Fionnacht.
