Text:  Functions Modeling Change: A Preparation for Calculus, 3e, Connally, Hughes-Hallett, Gleason, et al, 2007

Course Web Site: http://math.ucsd.edu/~barnold/math3c/

Course:  Math 3C is the preparatory course for Math 10A (Calculus).  The goal of the course is to develop the mathematical knowledge and skills, as well as the analytical and problem-solving skills necessary for the study of calculus.  Unlike some courses, attendance is required for all lectures, 4th hours, and discussion sections. The 4th hour is used as an additional lecture, since the course syllabus cannot reasonably be covered using only the scheduled lecture hours.  Discussion sections are used for group assignments (in-class quizzes).

Calculators: Graphing calculators are recommended in class and for homework.  The calculator will be used as an aid in learning concepts, not just as a means of computation.   Help with using graphing calculators will be available in the Calculus Lab. However, the use of calculators will NOT be permitted during midterm exams or the final exam.

Grading:                     Homework                     20%

                                    Discussion                     15%

                                    Midterm #1                    15%

                                    Midterm #2                    15%

Final Exam                    35%      (The final exam percent score will replace the lowest midterm percent score if higher.)

                                                                         100%

Homework:  (20%) Tentative homework assignments and their due dates have been posted on the course web site – any changes will be announced in class and highlighted in red on the course web site.  Supplemental homework problems will be assigned, announced in lecture and by e-mail, and posted on the course web site as a PDF file.  You will need to print the PDF file, do your work on the printed pages (do not copy the problems), and turn them on the due date. Homework assignments will be collected in section.  Late assignments will not be accepted; however, the lowest homework score will be dropped.  Selected problems on the assignment will be graded with comments.  While your work will be graded for correctness, presentation and organization directly affect your grader.  To assist your grader, you should keep all problems in the same order as the assignment list and ordered vertically on your page.  If a problem is omitted, it should still appear in the correct order.  All work must be on full-sized notebook paper.  Staple all pages together with your name (last name first), followed by your Discussion Section (A01, A02, etc.), followed by the homework assignment number all in the upper right corner.  Homework will be returned in section the following week. Watching someone else do a problem or ÒunderstandingÓ the solution in a Solutions Manual does not indicate mastery – you must be able to begin a solution on your own and carry it to completion without help before you can claim mastery of that problem.  Ask questions during office hours about homework problems that have caused you difficulty and indicate what attempts you have made to solve the problems. A thorough understanding of the homework problems and their solutions will prepare you well for the midterm exams and the final exam.

Discussion:  (15%) There are 8 discussion assignments. Discussion assignments are group work activities, where groups of 3 to 4 students work on a set of assigned problems and turn in one written set of solutions as a group at the end of section.  The TA and student interns will be available to facilitate these assignments and assist the groups during the discussion. One discussion assignment score will be dropped.  The first meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 15.

Midterms: (30% Total) Two midterm exams have been scheduled during the fourth hour lectures on January 31 and February 21.  Midterm #1 will cover material through Chapter 3. A practice midterm exam is available here.  Solutions to Midterm #1 are available here (Version #1) and here (Version #2).  Midterm #2 will cover material from Chapters 4 and 5 and Sections 6.1 – 6.5.  A practice midterm is available here. Solutions to Midterm #2 are available here (Version #1) and here (Version #2).  The midterm exams will not be rescheduled nor will students be allowed to take a midterm exam before/after the scheduled time - so make arrangements now to be in attendance.  Note: the final exam percent score will replace the lowest midterm percent score, if higher.

Final Exam:  (35%) The Final Exam is scheduled on Tuesday, March 18th, 7 – 10pm.  Please notify your instructor as soon as possible if you have a conflict. The final exam will not be rescheduled nor will students be allowed to take an exam before/after the scheduled time - so make arrangements now to be in attendance.  Note: the final exam percent score will replace the lowest midterm percent score, if higher. A practice final exam is available here.  A final exam review sheet is available here.

Academic Dishonesty:  UCSD policies regarding academic dishonesty will be strictly enforced.  Students caught cheating will be referred to the Office of Student Policies and Judicial Affairs for disciplinary action and possible administrative sanctions including suspension and expulsion from the University.  Bring your UCSD ID to every exam and be prepared to show it upon request.
