Instructions for Math 180A Final Exam
- Important: have some form of ID with you during the oral portion of the exam. A UCSD student ID is acceptable. We simply need to be able to verify your identity. Do not overthink this part.
- Your camera needs to be on during the oral exam when it is your turn.
Structure of the exam:
- The final exam is synchronous.
- The final exam is cumulative, but with an emphasis on the material since the second midterm.
- The written portion of the final exam will be accessible on the course Gradescope page from 7-8:30 PM PT on Dec 17. The deadline for submission is 8:30 PM PT. There be a late window of 10 minutes: exams submitted during this time will be subject to a penalty of 2 points per minute after the 8:30 PM PT deadline.
- Submissions after the late window (i.e., after 8:40 PM PT) will not be accepted (resulting in 0 score for the final exam) as the oral exam will commence after the written portion. The exam is written to take 70 minutes with 20 minutes for uploading. If you choose to spend more than 70 minutes working on the exam, then you run the risk of not being able to submit your exam on time.
- The written part will be followed by a Zoom conversation with the instructors. Have your camera and ID ready for the oral part.
Written part:
- This is an open-book exam. You are allowed to use the textbook, the course lecture notes/videos, and your personal notes. You are not allowed to use outside assistance. Outside assistance includes but is not limited to other people, the internet, and unauthorized notes.
- You are not allowed to use calculators or analogous software. All intermediate steps of your computations (computing integrals, solving systems of linear equations, etc.) should be included in your solutions.
Oral part:
- You will receive the meeting ID for the Zoom room via Canvas one day before the exam (check the announcements on Canvas on Dec 16).
- The Zoom meeting will start 60 minutes after the beginning of the exam.
- You must join the meeting no later than 8:50 PM PT. After this time, the Zoom meeting will be locked.
- Attendance will be taken to verify that all students join the Zoom room. Failure to attend the oral exam will result in a zero grade for the final exam.
- After joining the meeting, you will be placed into the waiting room. You will be then added to the conversation room one by one for a discussion with the instructors. It is important that you are ready to start the conversation at any time while in the waiting room.
- After being added to the conversation with the instructors, you have to turn on your camera and show your ID.
- The goal of the oral part is to make sure that students do not use outside help during the unproctored exams. You will be asked questions about your solutions to the written part of the exam submitted on Gradescope. Most of the conversations will be very short. In the case of serious inconsistencies between your written work and your oral explanations, some additional questions will be asked. If it becomes clear that the written part was completed using outside help, the case will be reported to the Academic Integrity Office. If you write your exam honestly, the oral part is a simple formality.
- The oral part will not be graded.
- The oral part will not be recorded.
