MATH 132A: Partial Differential Equations and Integral Equations
Winter quarter, 2005
Course Description
-
Basic concepts and classification of partial differential equations. First order equations,
characteristics. Hamilton-Jacobi theory, Laplace's equation, wave equation, heat equation.
Separation of variables, eigenfunction expansions, existence and uniqueness of solutions.
Prerequisites
- Math 110 or consent of instructor.

Homework
- Weekly homework is due at the beginning of each discussion class, and the graded
homework is returned in the next discussion class.
Note: no late homework will be accepetd
unless a written verification of a valid excuse (such as hospitalization,
family emergency, religious observance, court appearance, etc.) is provided.
Exams
- There will be one midterm and one final, close-book and close-note exams.
No calculators will be allowed in these exams. The final exam will be cumulative.
Midterm exam: Friday, February 11, 10:00 am - 10:50 am, WLH 2209.
Final exam: Tuesday, March 15, 8:00 am - 11:00 am, WLH 2209.
- Note: neither rescheduled nor make-up exams will be
allowed unless a written verification of a valid excuse (such as hospitalization,
family emergency, religious observance, court appearance, etc.) is provided.
Grading
- The final course grade will be determined based on the homework and exams
with the weights: homework - 25%, the midterm exam - 25%, and
the final exam - 50%.
