- Numerical differentiation and integration,
numerical methods for initial-value and
boundary-value problems of ordinary differential equations.
- Prerequisites
- Calculus, linear algebra, and basic knowledge of programming.

- R. L. Burden and J. D. Faires,
Numerical Analysis, 8th ed., Thomson Brooks/Cole, 2005.
(We will only cover Chapters 4, 5, and 11.)

- Matlab
- MATLAB is the official mathematical software and programming tool of the class.
- Homework
- Homework consists of analytical and computational parts. It is assigned and graded each weak.
Homework is due on each Friday in class.
- Note: no late homework will be accepted
unless a written verification of a valid excuse (such as hospitalization,
family emergency, religious observance, court appearance, etc.) is provided.
- Exams
- There will be one midterm and one final, close-book and close-note exams.
The final exam will be cumulative.
Midterm exam: 1:00 pm - 1:50 pm, Friday, May 5, Solis Lecture Hall 110.
Final exam: 11:30 am - 2:30, Thursday, June 15, Solis Lecture Hall 110.
- Note: neither rescheduled nor make-up exams will be
allowed unless a written verification of a valid excuse (such as hospitalization,
family emergency, religious observance, court appearance, etc.) is provided.
- Grading
- The final course grade will be determined based on the homework and exams
with the weights: homework - 20%, the midterm exam - 30%, and
the final exam - 50%.
