Homework Assigned every week and collected randomly.
Quizzes A close-book and close-note short quiz will be given in discussion class every week except for the week of a midterm exam and the last week of instruction. Quiz problems will be usually selected from the assigned homework problems. The two quizzes with the lowest score will be dropped. Note: neither rescheduled nor make-up quizzes will be allowed unless a written verification of a valid excuse (such as hospitalization, family emergency, religious observance, court appearance, etc.) is provided and approved by the teaching assistant.
Exams There will be three midterm and one final, close-book and close-note exams. No calculators will be allowed in any of these exams. The final exam will be cumulative.
Midterm exam 1: Thursday, March 1, in the discussion class.
Midterm exam 2: Thursday, April 5, in the discussion class.
Midterm exam 3: Thursday, May 3, in the discussion class.
Final exam: 1:30 -- 3:30, Friday, May 18 (room to be announced in class).
Note: neither rescheduled nor make-up exams will be allowed unless a written verification of a valid excuse (such as hospitalization, family emergency, religious observance, court appearance, etc.) is provided. A request for a rescheduled or make-up midterm exam must be approved by the teaching assistant and a request for a rescheduled or make-up final exam must be approved by the instructor.
Grading The final course grade will be determined based on the exams, homework, and quizzes with the following weights: final exam -- 30%, midterm exam 1 -- 20%, midterm exam 2 -- 20%, midterm exam 3 -- 20%, homework and quizzes -- 10%. In general, the final course grade will be based on the following cutoff lines: A -- 90%, B -- 75%, C -- 60%, and D -- 40%. However, necessary but slight adjustment will be made in case an exam is extremely difficult or easy.
