  • Catalog description: Analysis of numerical methods for linear algebraic systems, least squares problems, orthogonalization methods, eigenvalues and singular value decomposition.
  • Prerequisites: MATH 18 or MATH 20F or MATH 31AH (i.e. some version of linear algebra), and MATH 20C (calculus 3). Familiarity with basic programming (i.e. for-loops) is assumed, familiarity with MATLAB would be very helpful (see the syllabus for details).
  • Textbook: Fundamentals of Matrix Computation, by David Watkins, 3rd edition (2nd edition also ok). Lecture notes will be available as well. The lecture notes are an addition to the textbook, they do not replace it.

Classroom rules

If you plan to attend in-person meetings (lecture, discussion section, office hours), note the following UCSD rules (Return to Learn Campus plan), which the instructors will enforce:

  • Masking: All students and instructors must wears masks indoors. Please see the above website to learn which types of masks are allowed.
  • No eating or drinking. Specific instructions from UCSD: "Instructors may take hydration breaks while lecturing. Students should step outside to hydrate, if needed, during class".

Lecture notes, homework, discussion sections

Lecture notes will be made available on Canvas under Files.

There will be weekly homework. See the syllabus for details.

Discussion section problems will be posted on Canvas a few days before discussion sections take place. You should try to attempt the problems yourself before joining discussion sections (this will help you solve the homework). Solutions to the problems will also be posted to Canvas afterwards.
