General Course Information

Textbook: An Introduction to Mathematical Reasoning: numbers, sets and functions, by Peter J. Eccles

This course is intended to prepare you for the upper-division math courses required of math majors. In it, you will learn basic techniques of proof, along with some propositional logic and set theory. The basic theory will also be applied to interesting problems in number theory and combinatorics.

There will be 2 in-class midterms on Monday 4/19/10 and Monday 5/17/10, and a final exam on Day 6/7/10 from 8:00am-11:00 am. No makeup exams will be given.

Homework assignments will be due weekly on in class. Late homework cannot be accepted.

The final grade will be determined as follows: Homework 25%, Midterms 25%, Final Exam 50%.

Note: The schedule of lectures is approximate and is subject to constant revision during the term. Chapter numbers refer to Eccles, An Introduction to Mathematical Reasoning. Copies of the homework assignments will be found by following the links on the calendar.

Here are the scans from the book of the first set of problems. (1-5 are the only ones due next week).

Scan of pages 53-57 of the book.

Here is a sample first midterm from 2008: Sample midterm.

Here is another sample first midterm, along with the solutions: Midterm 1 solutions.

Here is a sample second midterm, along with the solutions: Midterm 2 solutions.
