Math 20C Syllabus
Title: Calculus and Analytic Geometry for Science and Engineering
Credit Hours: 4
(Two units of credit given if taken after Math 10C. Credit not offered for both Math 20C and 31BH. Formerly numbered Math 21C.)
AP Calculus BC score of 4 or 5, or Math 20B with a grade of C- or better.
Vector geometry, vector functions and their derivatives. Partial differentiation. Maxima and minima. Double integration.
Textbook: The required textbook for the course is
J. E. Marsden, A. Tromba, Vector Calculus (6th edition), Published by W.H.Freeman and Company, 2012.
- We will use Chapters 1-5 of the text.
Reading the sections of the textbook corresponding to the assigned homework exercises
is considered part of the homework assignment.
You are responsible for material in the assigned reading whether or not it is discussed in the lecture.
Piazza: The TAs and I will be offering help on Piazza Monday-Friday.
Only comments/questions pertaining to the mathematical content of the course are allowed.
Any postings that do not meet this criteria will be deleted and Piazza privileges may be removed.
As a diverse community of learners, students must strive to work together in a setting of civility, tolerance, and respect for each other and for the instructor.
Conflicting opinions among members of a class are to be respected and responded to in a professional manner.
There are to be no offensive comments or language.
Homework: As you are aware, you must learn math by doing math.
You should try your best to work carefully on
every assignment and complete every problem. We will have two
different kinds of homework assignments in this class: online homework
(which will be graded) and "paper-and-pen" homework (which will not be graded).
- Online homework will be done through WebAssign ; you can access this through https://www.webassign.net
with Class Key ( ucsd 7430 3751 ).
- The "paper-and-pen" homework assignments will be announced
These assignments will not be turned in and will not be graded; however,
if you seek help from the instructor or TAs, they will often do these problems.
- You can also get help with the textbook homework in the
Drop-in Content Tutoring.
A Student Solutions Manual (available in the Bookstore) has complete solutions for
odd-numbered problems in the text.
It may be helpful to check the accuracy of your homework with a calculator.
However, work the problems by hand, since
you will not be allowed access to any electronic computing devices during exams.
Exams: There will be two midterm exams and a final exam.
The exact dates of the midterm and final exams can be found
- Unless otherwise permitted explicitly in the instructions, you can use one 8.5 x 11 inch sheet of handwritten notes.
- Please bring your student ID to the exam. There are no make-up or retake exams.
- You should not enroll in the class if you cannot attend the final exam at its scheduled time.
- You must pass the final exam (>59%) in order to pass the class. The actual required percentage may be lowered depending on the overall class performance.
- Students suspected of academic dishonesty will have a follow up Zoom oral meeting about the exam with me. AI violations will be taken seriously, and will have serious consequences.
- All students must have a device (labtop/surface/smartphone) with internet access that can run zoom and a private location so that they can be proctored on exams.
Make-up exams will not be given. If you miss a midterm exam for any
reason, then your course grade will be computed using Method 2. (See
Grading: There are three methods to determine your course grade:
- Method 1: 25% Homework, 20% Midterm Exam I, 20% Midterm Exam II, 35% Final Exam
- Method 2: 25% Homework, 25% Better Midterm Exam, 50% Final Exam
- Method 3: 30% Better Midterm Exam, 20% Worse Midterm Exam, 50% Final Exam
Your grade will be computed using all three methods and then the best grade will be used.
After your weighted average is calculated,
letter grades will be assigned based on the standard grading scale:
We may adjust the scale to be more lenient,
but we guarantee that the grade corresponding to a given percentage
will not be lower than specified by the above scale.
There will be no curve,
but we may adjust the scale to be more lenient (depending on the
performance of the class). Please note that there are no D grades in the
Math 10 and 20 calculus sequences.
Please notice that outside factors,
including the need for a certain grade for admission/retention in any
academic program, scholarship or transfer credit, graduation
requirements or personal desire for a specific grade DO NOT appear in
the above calculations, and thus are not considered in any way in the
determination of your course grade. Effort, improvement, class
attendance and participation will all dramatically improve your grade in
the course in that they will allow you to do well on exams,
and the final exam. They will NOT, however, actively participate in the
calculation of your course grade.
Regrades: Your exams will be graded using Gradescope.
You will be able to request a regrade via Gradescope for a specified window of time.
Be sure to make your request within the specified window of time; no regrade requests
will be accepted after the deadline.
Late Homework: It is possible to
request an automatic extension of the due date (of 7 days) through Webassign.
However, late submissions
earn a maximum of 50% of their total score. This penalty applies only to excercises
submitted after the due date and not to those already submitted before the due date.
Academic Dishonesty: Academic dishonesty is considered a serious offense at UCSD.
Students caught cheating will face an administrative sanction which may include suspension or expulsion from the university.
It is in your best interest to maintain your academic integrity.

Accommodations: Students requesting accommodations and services due to a disability for
this course need to provide a current Authorization for Accommodation (AFA) letter issued by the Office for
Students with Disabilities (OSD) , prior to eligibility for requests. Receipt of AFAs in advance is necessary
for appropriate planning for the provision of reasonable accommodations. OSD Academic Liaisons also need to
