Course:  Math 10C

Title:  Calculus III

Credit Hours:   4  (No credit given if taken after or concurrent with 20C.).

Prerequisite:  AP Calculus BC score of 3, 4, or 5, or Math 10B, or Math 20B, or equivalent.

Catalog Description:  Introduction to functions of more than one variable. Vector geometry, partial derivatives, velocity and acceleration vectors, optimization problems.

Textbook: Calculus: Concepts and Contexts (Enhanced with Webassign), Fourth Edition, by James Stewart; published by Brooks/Cole, 2010

Subject Material:  We shall cover parts of Chapters 9, 10, 11, and 12 of the text.

Reading Assignments:  Reading and doing the examples in the sections of the textbook corresponding to our discussions in lecture will help you learn and understand the course material better.  If you work through the relevant examples in the book before you start your homework problems, you will probably solve the homework problems more easily and perform better on your exams than if you do not do the reading.  Your reading assignments are on the course calendar; for example, 9.1 is lectured on April 2, so your assignment is to read Section 9.1 before our class meeting that day.

TritonEd and Webassign:   We will use TritonEd for two purposes in this class: to disseminate grades, and as a portal to Webassign, the online homework system associated to the textbook, through which you will submit your homework.  Here are the steps to access your online course materials for the first time:

1. Sign into TritonEd and enter your Math 10C course
2. Click the "Webassign" link at the top of the main menu column on the left

Homework:  Homework is a very important part of the course, and in order to fully master the topics, it is essential that you work carefully on every assignment and try your best to complete every problem.  In this class, we will have online homework which will be assigned through Webassign and will be accessible via TritonEd, as indicated above. Note:

• You will be allowed 100 attempts to correctly answer the problems which are not multiple choice problems.
• You will be allowed three attempts to correctly answer the multiple choice problems which have four or more options.
• You will be allowed ONE attempt to correctly answer the multiple choice problems which have two options.
• (Late Homework) If you need to turn in some homework problems late, you can request an "automatic" extension of the due date. For any given assignment, you may request four extra days to work on the assignment, but you must make the request within three days of the original due date.  Here are the instructions to request an automatic extension .  Please note that there is a late penalty of 50% for homework submitted after the due date.  This penalty is applied only to the problems which are submitted late, and not to those already submitted before the due date.
• No homework scores will be dropped at the end of the quarter.
• Homework may not be submitted after the day of the final exam.

Electronic Computing Devices:   Graphing calculators and computer programs (or online computing websites such as Wolfram Alpha) can be very helpful when working through your homework.   However, a calculator/computer should be used as an aid in the learning concepts, not just as a means of computation.   You should use these devices when working on math problems at home, but always keep in mind that you will not be allowed access to any electronic computing devices during exams.   Of course, this also means that you will not be asked to solve problems on exams that require the aid of an electronic computing device.

Homework Help:   You can get help with the homework assignments in discussion section, office hours, and free walk-in tutoring center in the Teaching and Learning Commons.

Homework Help (Piazza):  Piazza is an online discussion forum that allows you to ask questions using mathematical symbols and expressions.   Piazza was designed to enable you to get help quickly and efficiently from classmates, TAs, and instructors.  Rather than emailing questions to the teaching staff, you are encouraged to post your questions, especially those about syntax (how to type your answers to the online homework) on Piazza.   Find our class page at: https://piazza.com/ucsd/spring2018/math10c.   If you have any problems or feedback for the developers, email team@piazza.com.

Midterm Exams:   There will be two midterm examinations during the quarter. Please note:

• The midterm exams on Wednesday, April 25 and Wednesday, May 23 will be held during the usual lecture time in the lecture hall.
• Within that time slot, the duration of the midterm will be exactly one hour.
• There will be no makeup or rescheduling of the midterm exams, so make sure that you do not have a schedule conflict.
• You may bring one 8.5 by 11 inch sheet of notes with you to the midterm exam (handwritten, front and back OK).
• No calculators will be allowed during the midterm exam.
• If you violate the instructions of the midterm or communicate in any way with any other student during the midterm, you will receive a zero on the midterm, and the zero will not be dropped when computing your cumulative course average.

Final Exam:  The final exam will be held from 11:30 am - 2:29 pm on Thursday, June 14.  Please note:

• It is your responsibility to ensure that you do not have a schedule conflict involving the final exam; you should not enroll in this class if you cannot sit for the final examination at its scheduled time.
• Within that time slot, the duration of the final exam will be exactly three hours.
• You may bring one 8.5 by 11 inch sheet of notes with you to thefinal exam (handwritten, front and back OK).
• No calculators will be allowed during the final exam.
• If you violate the instructions of the final or communicate in any way with any other student during the final, you will receive a zero on the final, which means that you will fail the class.

Grades: Your cumulative average will be the best of the following two weighted averages:

• 15% Online Homework, 20% Midterm Exam 1, 20% Midterm Exam 2, 45% Final Exam
• 15% Online Homework, 30% Best Midterm Exam, 55% Final Exam

• You must pass the final examination in order to pass the course.
• Since there are no makeup exams, if you miss an exam for any reason then your course grade will be computed with the final exam counting 55% of your weighted average.

Suggestions:   Below are some suggestions that we hope will help you to succeed in this course:

• Spend sufficient time on the course.  According to the policy of UCSD's Academic Senate, "The value of a course in units...shall be reckoned at the rate of one unit for three hours' work per week per quarter on the part of the student."  Since this course is worth 4 credits, you should be willing to spend about 12 hours per week on the course.
• Keep up with the homework and do not miss a homework assignment.  Missing a homework assignment will hurt your grade because no homework scores will be dropped.  This policy is designed to encourage students to complete all the assignments and reward those who do.
• Get started on the homework assignments early.  This will enable you to make the most of your discussion section time by coming prepared with specific questions.
• Experiences shows that you have plenty of time during the final exam. Rather than turning it in after one hour, read and re-read it again and check your solutions for stupid little mistakes or larger misunderstandings.
• Think about mathematics every day.
