Math 10B Syllabus
Summer Session I 2009

Updated June 26, 2009

Course:  Math 10B

Title:  Calculus

Credit Hours:  4

Prerequisite:  Math 10A or equivalent

Textbook: Calculus, fourth edition, by Deborah Hughes-Hallett, et. al.; published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.; 2005 (Note:  The "Single Variable" paperback version suffices for Math 10A and 10B; the full hardcover version is appropriate if you will be taking Math 10A, 10B, and 10C.)

Subject Material:  We will cover parts of chapters 5, 6, 7, 8, and 11 of the text.

Calculators:  A graphing calculator (for example, a TI-83) is recommended but not necessary.   Note: You may use a calculator during exams; however, you will be expected to show all work leading to a solution. No credit will be given to unsupported answers obtained directly from your calculator.

Homework:  Homework assignments will be due roughly once a week and can be found here. Homework is due by 1:45 pm in the drop box (6th floor of AP&M) on the due date. Under no circumstances will late homework be accepted. You may turn it in early if you'd prefer.

Lecture:  Attending the lecture is a fundamental part of the course; you are responsible for material presented in the lecture whether or not it is discussed in the textbook.  You should expect questions on the exams that will test your understanding of concepts discussed in the lecture.

Reading:  Reading the sections of the textbook corresponding to the assigned homework exercises is considered part of the homework assignment; you are responsible for material in the assigned reading whether or not it is discussed in the lecture.

Midterm Exams:  There will be two midterm exams given during class on July 9th and July 23rd. (See the course calendar.) You may bring one 8.5 by 11 inch handwritten sheet of notes with you to each midterm exam.   There will be no makeup exams.

Final Exam:  The final examination will be held at the following date and time:

You may bring one 8.5 by 11 inch handwritten sheet of notes with you to the final examination. University policies on exams can be found here and here.

Regrades:  Homework and midterm exams will be returned in the discussion sections. If you wish to have your homework or exam regraded, you must return it immediately to your TA. Regrade requests will not be considered once the homework or exam leaves the room. If you do not retrieve your homework or exam during discussion section, you must arrange to pick it up from your TA within one week after it was returned in order for any regrade request to be considered.

Grading: Your course grade will be determined by your cumulative average at the end of the term and will be based on the following scale:

A+ A A- B+ B B- C+ C C- D
97 93 90 87 83 80 77 73 70 60

I may adjust the scale to be more lenient, but the grade corresponding to a given percentage will not be lower than specified by the above scale. Your cumulative average will be the best of the following two weighted averages:
  • 15% Homework,  20% Midterm Exam I,  20% Midterm Exam II,  45% Final Exam
  • 15% Homework,  20% Best Midterm,  65% Final Exam
Note: Since there are no makeup exams, if you miss an exam for any reason then your course grade will be computed with the final exam counting 65% of your weighted average.

Academic Dishonesty:  Academic dishonesty is considered a serious offense at UCSD. Students caught cheating will face an administrative sanction which may include suspension or expulsion from the university.
