This is the third class in a full-year (three quarter) course on Lie Groups. Topics include the Lie-Cartan theorem and full Lie correspondence, Cartan's torus theorem, the Weyl integration formula, basics of representation theory, the representation theory of sl(2,C) and sl(3,C), overview of semisimple Lie algebras, root systems, representation theory of semisimple Lie algebras, representation theory of compact groups, and the Peter-Weyl theorem.

We will follow my notes:

Course Notes "Introduction to Smooth Manifolds and Lie Groups"

Another good resource for Lie groups is the excellent textbook "Lie Groups, Lie Algebras, and Representations" by Brian C. Hall. It is available for free to UCSD affiliates as a pdf download from SpringerLink.

Grades: Attendance will be taken at every lecture starting in Week 2. Everyone who attends regularly will be given a grade of at least B (or S if taking S/U). To achieve a higher grade, students must turn in homework.

There is be one homework set posted below.

Homework: due on Wednesday, June 12, by 1:00p.    Homework.
