Other Experience
Professional Development
In addition to my official duties as a TA, I have actively sought out opportunities to learn
and grow as an educator.
- Math Education Reading Group (UCSD) (F18)
Meets weekly with professors and graduate students to discuss
selected topics in math education research.
- Supplemental Instruction Program
(UT Austin) (S15-S17)
Worked with professional learning specialists and graduate students to
improve pedagogy and acquire practical skills as a TA.
- CNS Concentration in Teaching and Mentoring
(UT Austin) (F16-S17)
Passed a series of three semester-long courses offered by the College of Natural Sciences:
Intro to Evidence-Based Teaching (NSC 088L), Mentored Teaching Experience (NSC 088T),
and Mentoring Undergraduate Researchers (NSC 088M).
- Inclusive Classrooms Leadership Seminar
(UT Austin) (S16)
Attended a training program designed to foster inclusivity,
understanding, and diversity within college classrooms.
Mentoring
I welcome the opportunity to share my mathematical knowledge and personal experiences
within the field with undergraduates and younger graduate students, especially those
underrepresented in mathematics.
- First Year Mentor (UT Austin; UCSD) (F14, F15; F18)
Advised incoming first-year graduate students on courses, qualifying exams,
and the transition to graduate student life.
- RTG Reading Group (UCSD) (S18)
Co-mentored a group of four undergraduates in ergodic theory
with applications to number theory.
- Women in Math Mentoring Program (UT Austin) (F16)
Advised a female undergraduate math major on academic
and professional issues facing women in math.
- Directed Reading Program
(UT Austin) (S16)
Mentored an undergraduate math major on the topic of dynamical systems.
Outreach
The general public is often misinformed about what math is, who can practice
math, and what role math may play in their lives.
I believe that it is crucially important that the mathematical community reach out
to broad audiences to correct these myths and share our deep love of the subject.
- ComSciCon-SD (UCSD) (Su18)
Selected to participate in a two-day workshop designed
to empower graduate students to communicate complex
technical concepts to diverse and nonspecialist audiences.
- SMMG Mini Math Camp
(UT Austin) (S16)
Helped organize a free weekend program for primary school students in the Austin area
though the Sunday Morning Math Group community outreach program.
Writing Center Work
Writing is an essential part of acquiring and disseminating knowledge in any discipline,
including mathematics. Writing Centers are an invaluable resource for students at all
levels to improve their communication skills and writing habits.
I have had the pleasure of consulting with undergraduate and graduate students of all disciplines
in writing centers at two different institutions.
- Graduate Peer Writing Consultant
(UT Austin) (F16-S17)
Collaborated with graduate and professional students to improve writing in
one-on-one sessions, helped run graduate writing retreats, and completed
certification requirements for a specialization in working with English
Language Learners.
- Writing Center Consultant
(Harvey Mudd College) (F10-S13)
Collaborated with undergraduates to improve writing in one-on-one sessions,
organized workshops on special topics in writing, completed a course on writing
pedagogy, and presented at the 2012
International Writing Center Association Conference in San Diego.
