Committee Assignments

This document is still under construction. In particular, the Chair may choose to re-interpret the duties of any committee as needed for smooth operation of the department.

Chair

The Chair duties are laid out in:

Vice Chair-Graduate Affairs

In cooperation with the Chair, oversee all aspects of the graduate program except graduate course assignments.

Vice Chair-Undergraduate Affairs

In cooperation with the Chair and the Council, oversee all undergraduate teaching and all course assignments.

Department Academic Personnel Committee

Assists the Chair and the departmental adhoc committees with academic file preparation and submission.

Department Council

The duties of the Council are set out in the Department By-Laws, where the Council is referred to as the CEEP. The Council, Chair, and Vice-Chairs meet weekly to advise the Chair on department business.

Hiring Committee

Academic Senate Representatives

Attend meetings of the Academic Senate and represent the department in votes of that body which has six scheduled meetings during the academic year.

Actuarial Exam

Administer the actuarial exams in November, February and May.

Area Course Coordinators

Early in Winter quarter, meet with faculty in the area, coordinate suggestions for courses to be taught in the area and recommend faculty to teach those courses in the following year. For this purpose, the department faculty is divided into 6 areas:

    Algebra and Number Theory
    Analysis (including Probability)
    Combinatorics/Computer Science
    Geometry
    Numerical Analysis/CSME
    Statistics

Biostatistics Committee

TBA.

Committee on Teaching

Members visit classes to give individual faculty members feedback on teaching effectiveness and improvement. The committee supplies a written evaluation of teaching for submission in a merit or promotion file.

Community Teaching Fellowship Advisor/Teacher Ed Program

Liaison with Randy Souviney (TEP) who handles the placement of UCSD undergraduate/graduate mathematics majors in local K-12 school sites to enhance their mathematics curricula.

Computing Equipment

Oversee department computer needs and purchases, in cooperation with the Chair, the MSO and the department's computer support personnel. Participate in yearly evaluation of the latter.

Course Textbook Coordinator/Calculus Committee

Determine texts to be used in the lower division calculus and linear algebra courses.

Development Committee

Helps to coordinate outside fundraising efforts.

Education Abroad Program

Advise students interested in participating in the EAP.

Faculty Colloquium

Approve and oversee funds and schedules for colloquium visitors.

Faculty/Graduate Get-Together

Organize the monthly get-together with graduate students at the faculty club.

Liaison with Schools/S.D. High School Honors Math Contest

Write exam for San Diego High School Honors Math Contest held each May, and evaluate student work for individual and team awards.

Liaison with Math Circles

Library

Represent department on Science and Engineering Library Committee at quarterly meetings.

Math 20D/20F MATLAB Coordinator

TBA.

Math 20E Examiner

Give quizzes for Math 20E credit by transfer.

Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) Representative

Departmental representative to MSRI. Responsibilities determined by MSRI.

Powell Visiting Professor Committee

TBA.

Precalculus Coordinator

Coordinate all precalculus courses and the placement exams for the calculus sequences.

Pre-Graduate School Advisor

Each Fall, establish specific office hours to advise seniors interested in applying to graduate schools. May participate in quarterly meetings held for current/prospective majors.

Putnam Advisor

Prepare students for the Putnam Exam, and administer the exam.

Student Colloquium Coordinator (Math 196 / 296).

Coordinate the weekly undergraduate colloquium.

UNDERGRADUATE AFFAIRS

Undergraduate Program Oversight

Oversee development of the department's undergraduate programs. Working with the Chair, Undergraduate Vice-Chair and MSO, assist the department's Math Advising Officer in efforts to improve advising and instruction.

Pure Mathematics Advisors

Advise undergraduates in Pure Mathematics. Advising may be particularly heavy during Web-Reg in 7th week of each quarter. Attend quarterly meetings for majors. Provide input to Chair/Council for catalog copy and undergraduate curriculum.

Applied Mathematics and Mathematics-Scientific Computation Advisors

Advise undergraduates in the Applied Mathematics major. Advising may be particularly heavy during Web-Reg in 7th week of each quarter. Attend quarterly meetings for majors. Provide input to Chair/Council for catalog copy and undergraduate curriculum.

Mathematics-Applied Science

Advise undergraduates in the Mathematics-Applied Science major. Advising may be particularly heavy during Web-Reg in 7th week of each quarter. Attend quarterly meetings for majors. Provide input to Chair/Council for catalog copy and undergraduate curriculum.

Mathematics-Computer Science Advisors

Advise undergraduates in the Mathematics-Computer Science major. Advising may be particularly heavy during Web-Reg in 7th week of each quarter. Attend quarterly meetings for majors. Provide input to Chair/Council for catalog copy and undergraduate curriculum.

Joint Major in Mathematics and Economics Advisors

Advise undergraduates in the joint major of Mathematics/Economics. Advising may be particularly heavy during Web-Reg in 7th week of each quarter. Attend quarterly meetings for majors. Provide input to Chair/Council for catalog copy and undergraduate curriculum.

Probability and Statistics Advisors

Advise undergraduates in the joint major of Mathematics/Economics. Advising may be particularly heavy during Web-Reg in 7th week of each quarter. Attend quarterly meetings for majors. Provide input to Chair/Council for catalog copy and undergraduate curriculum.

Mathematics-Secondary Education Advisors

Advise undergraduates in the Secondary Ed major. Advising may be particularly heavy during Web-Reg in 7th week of each quarter. Attend quarterly meetings for majors. Provide input to Chair/Council for catalog copy and undergraduate curriculum.

Course Articulation Advisors

Keep up-to-date the documentation used to determine course equivalences with other colleges in California. Serve as referee for all calculus equivalence petitions.

Undergraduate Honors Program and Awards

Review all candidates for the departmental honors program and determine the level of honors to be awarded based on the students' GPA and the quality of the honors work.

GRADUATE AFFAIRS

GAANN Committee

Advise concerning the GAANN grant and students.

Graduate Advising

Advise entering graduate students as well as continuing graduate students who have not advanced to candidacy. Participate in Fall Orientation meeting held the week before instruction begins. Maintain specific advising hours prior to/during quarterly registration. Advisor approval signature is required for all graduate student registration. Participate in annual Spring Ph.D. student evaluations.

Graduate Advisory Committee

Minority/Women Graduate Fellowships Mentor

Advises San Diego Fellows, which involves bi-weekly meetings.

Faculty Affirmative Action Representative (OGS)

Participates in graduate admissions process.

Graduate Admissions

Read and rank all files of graduate applicants. Provide input to the Graduate Vice-Chair who oversees the process and authorizes admissions and financial support. Application deadline is in early January; so major responsibility occurs in Winter quarter.

Graduate Office Assignments

Language Exams

Administer the foreign language exams required of Ph.D. students.

Math Storm Advisor

TBA.

TA Committee

Consists of the Vice-Chairs of the Graduate and Undergraduate Programs. This committee meets quarterly with the Senior TA and faculty member in charge of TA Assignments to balance resources and enrollment needs.

TA Assignments

Responsible for TA assignments, in cooperation with the Senior TA and the Graduate and Undergraduate Vice-Chairs. Initial assignments are made the week before the start of each quarter's instruction. Act as primary faculty/graduate student contact in the TA assignment process.

Senior TA

Supervise new TAs and prepare initial draft of TA assignments, in cooperation with the faculty member in charge of TA assignments.

TA Training and Annual Conference

With Senior TA, run training programs and supervise new TAs. Collaborate with the Center for Teaching Development (2 meetings per year).

English Exam

Administer English language exam to foreign TAs as needed.

Qualifying Exam and Appeals Committee

Meet following qualifying exam sessions to vote on pass levels and rule on exceptions and appeals by graduate students.

Qualifying Exam Reform Committee
