If you surf, or would like to learn, then you’re in luck; UCSD was recently named the top surfing college in the US. Campus is quite close to several popular surfing spots. If you’re new to the sport, UCSD Recreation offers introductory classes. These are usually taught near Scripps Pier. This is a great way to see if surfing is something that you’d like to pursue. Since a new surfboard can easily cost upwards of $400, this is definitely something to consider.
Scripps and La Jolla Shores are decent spots to learn the sport, since the surf is usually (though not always) fairly tame. Just north of there is Black’s beach, arguably home to one of San Diego’s finest waves. This is a significantly more advanced and dangerous spot, and you shouldn’t surf there until you’re quite comfortable with the basics.
