Petitions

A petition is used to request an exception to UCSD university, college, and major policies. Most UC San Diego petitions (and other student forms) can be found as PDFs here.

Other petitions are needed when a student wants to do something that is unusual. Example: If you want to double major, use the Double Major Petition form. (This petition is a two-page document. Read the rules for double-majoring on Page 2 of the Double Major Petition.)

Petition forms vary in approval requirements. Some are accepted and logged by staff, but only reviewed for approval or denial by faculty members. Other petition forms are reviewed and approved/denied by staff members at your department and/or at your college.

Whenever you are submitting a petition to the Math Department, please remember to do the following:

  1. Carefully, fully read and follow all instructions associated with a petition.
  2. Neatly, legibly, and completely fill out the proper petition form for your situation.
  3. Have all necessary supporting or supplementary documentation (with your name, PID, and current date legibly printed on them) with you when you submit your petition.
  4. Allow enough time for the petition process, which necessitates responsibly planning ahead of time.

The Department of Mathematics normally notifies students through the Virtual Advising Center (VAC) when a decision has been made on a petition that required faculty review. You should receive an email or text alerting you to a new message in your VAC account whenever one is posted there.

Here are some common types of petitions and the procedures students should follow:

  • Transfer equivalency petition
    • This petition is reviewed by the department faculty offering the equivalent course. Math courses taken at other schools that are not already on this list should be petitioned for equivalency.
    • Submit these completed petitions to the Math Department front desk (in-person or email submission is fine).
    • Include a syllabus or course outline (with specific lecture topics and textbook/chapter information) with your petition for our faculty to review.
    • Expect 2-3 weeks for full review.
    • Petition form (PDF)
    • Information Sheet (PDF)
  • Major requirement exception petition
    • This petition is reviewed by the department faculty advisor designated to your major (or proposed major). Any course you would like to use to fulfill a Math major requirement that is not currently listed in the General Catalog requirements list must be petitioned.
    • Submit these completed petitions either to the Math Department front desk (in-person or email submission is fine) or directly to the faculty advisor for your major (and then to the front desk for final processing).
    • Include a course description and/or syllabus copy with your petition for the faculty advisor to review.
    • Expect 2-3 weeks for full review.
    • Petition form (PDF)
  • Department policy exception petition
    • This petition is reviewed by the department faculty advisor designated to your major (or proposed major). Any department policy you want to request waived (minimum unit requirement, minimum grade requirement, minimum GPA requirement, etc.) must be reviewed by petition.
    • Submit these completed petitions either to the Math Department front desk (in-person or email submission is fine) or directly to the faculty advisor for your major (and then to the front desk for final processing).
    • Include a personal statement explaining why you cannot meet the department policy you are requesting waived.
    • Expect 2-3 weeks for full review.
    • Petition form (PDF)
  • Double Major petition
    • This petition is reviewed by a department staff advisor to ensure all major requirements will be satisfactorily completed by the student’s expected graduation term.
    • Students may also need to submit a major requirement exception petition if they are planning to use courses from outside the Math Department as overlapping courses for their double major.
    • Please bring this completed petition for review during designated Walk-in hours (hours listed on math.ucsd.edu).
    • Double Major Petition form (PDF)

Petitions for University exceptions may take longer to review as they will undergo more scrutiny and must meet certain criteria for approval, as outlined by the Academic Senate here (PDF).

Please feel free to contact us on the Virtual Advising Center if you have questions about other types of petition requests, or if you have any other petition-related questions.
