Computation of grade: homework: 20%, midterm: 30%, final 50%. The worst homework score will be dropped.

Dates of exams: No make-up exams!

Midterm: 11/9 in class

Course material: We will use the book "Nonlinear dynamics and chaos" by Steven Strogatz, 2nd edition

Homework assignments Unless further notice, homework is to be turned in Wednesdays by 5pm. There will be a drop box in the basement of APM.

Disclaimer: I will try to get the homework assignment on the net in time. Due to time and other limitations, this may not always be possible. The fact that there is no assignment posted for a particular date does therefore NOT necessarily mean that no homework is due.

for 9/28: 2.1.1, 2.1.2, 2.1.3, 2.2.3, 2.2.5, 2.4.4

for 10/5: Chapter 2: 2.3.4, 2.5.4, 2.6.2 (check that you can use the rule of substitution for the integral), 2.7.1, 2.7.4, Chapter 3: 3.1.1, 3.1.3

for 10/12: Chapter 3: 3.2.3, 3.2.4, 3.4.2, 3.4.3, 3.4.7, ("sketch vector field" here just means you should indicate on the x-axis whether we move to the left or to the right)

for 10/19: 3.4.11, 3.4.14, 3.5.6(without (e); for (a) assume x(t)=exp(at) and calculate a from the differential equation), 3.5.8, 3.6.2

for 10/26: 3.7.2 (for (b): hint: for which x reaches r its maximum?), 4.1.2, 4.1.5, 4.1.8, 4.2.3 (only first method), 4.3.2

for 11/2: 4.3.3, 5.1.1, 5.1.2, 5.2.1, 5.2.2 (see note below about general background)
