Discussion sections are an opportunity to answer any questions that you have about the course or the homework, and to go over basic concepts in the course that may not be covered in lecture. Come in armed with (relevant) questions, and the instructional staff will do their best to answer them in the short time that they have.
Piazza is an online discussion forum that allows you to ask questions using mathematical symbols and expressions. Piazza was designed to enable you to get help quickly and efficiently from classmates, TAs, and instructors. You are encouraged to post your questions on Piazza, and are likely to get quicker responses there. The instructional staff may provide important details about the course, corrections, and other information on piazza. Students will be responsible for keeping up with information provided by instructional staff on piazza. Student answers may not be considered official unless the answers are endorsed by any instructor of the course, with the professor of the course having final say on any answer. Find our class piazza page at: https://piazza.com/ucsd/summer2017/math20c/home. If you have any problems or feedback for the developers, email team@piazza.com
From the website: As part of the Teaching + Learning Commons, the SupplementaI Instruction (SI) program provides academic support for students who are enrolled in courses that have been challenging to students in the past. SI Leaders attend all lectures alongside the students who are enrolled in the course, so they always know what is happening in the class. In SI sessions, SI Leaders do not re-lecture or introduce new material. Rather, SI Leaders are trained to maximize active student involvement with the course material and to integrate how-to-learn with what-to-learn; as a result, students who attend SI sessions understand the material better. SI sessions will be Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 1PM, at the Teaching + Learning Commons, room 1505 (the first level of Geisel Library). More details can be found at https://commons.ucsd.edu/students/supplemental-instruction/index.html.
I fully expect that there will be problems on the homework that many of you will struggle on. For some subset of these problems, I will post solutions to them online. If there's any problem that you want me to post a solution to, please E-mail me. If enough of you request that I post the solution to a certain problem, I will post it (it will be under the "Solutions" tab in my course webpage).
Homework will be due every Monday at 5PM, beginning Monday, July 10th, 2017. The final homework, homework 5, will be due on the day of the final. There is a box set up to turn in homework in the basement level of AP&M (take a left out of the elevators and it should be to your left). The box should have one of the only bright orange tags, with the course number (math 20C), the professor's name (Jor-el Briones), the TA names, and the section times. Please turn in homework in that box, or hand it in during section. Once homework has been graded, you may pick up homework during discussion section or during office hours. In the latter case, you may want to let your TA know ahead of time to pick up homework.
