Textbook Information
The required textbook for the course is Fundamentals of Differential Equations (9th Edition), by Nagle, Saff, and Snider; published by Pearson. We WILL use the online homeworks that are associated with the textbook.
Lectures
No live lectures in general. Lecture videos will be posted on google drive; the link can be found in the announcement in Canvas. You need to use your UCSD gmail account to view it.

Exam Information
There will be four 30-minutes quizzes, one 2-hour final exam. Check the
Course Calendar for the dates.
The quizzes are online through MyLab. Students must start the quiz at any time between 00:00 am -- 11:29 pm (PST) on the assigned date. Students are expected to complete in one session (no interruptions are allowed).
Student cannot access other assignments or questions while taking a quiz. If the student does not submit the quiz, access to all questions and assignments is blocked.
The limit number of attempts is 2. This means that you can take the quiz twice in total, but each time the questions might be different. The coverage of quizzes will be announced through emails.
Final Exam is
"paper and pen". The time is 7/30/2021 3--5 pm (The alternative time is scheduled to be 8--10 pm on the same day. You can only select one time. There will be two separated versions of exam on Gradescope for the two time slots.)
The final exam is accumulative.

All exams will be open book exams. You are going to submit your work to gradescope.
- The solutions are supposed to be readable, the pictures are not blurring, and the submission should be on time!
- No electronic devices are allowed and you cannot use the internet, except for the purpose of writing solutions and uploading the works. Do not use chegg or any other online tools! And you are not allowed to share your exam to any other people or to cooperate with any other people in any way during the exam time!
- Please be aware that exams or quizzes at different time are different.
- You have 5 minutes to take pictures of your work and submit them to gradescope. Normally you only need 2-3 minutes to take pictures of your work and upload then to gradescope. But please organize your time well. If you encounter some unexpected technical issue, please let me know as soon as possible. You are recommended to send me or the TA a picture of your works (with low resolution) as a proof.
Links to old Math 20D exams appear below. The following exams are provided "as is"—exactly as they appeared when administered and without answers. These are NOT practice exams. They may differ in form and content from the exams given this term. Working through these old exams may be helpful, but it is not a substitute for reviewing your notes, homework, and keeping up with the class on a daily basis. They are provided so that you can know what exams in this class will look like.
It is your responsibility to ensure that you do not have a schedule conflict involving the final examination.
Make-up Exams or Quizzes: Make-up quizzes or exam will not be given, nor will we offer exams at an extra alternate time. If you miss a quiz for any reason, the score for that quiz will be 0.
Late submissions: 2 points are going to be taken off for submissions that are submitted within 5 minutes after the deadline. Submissions after 5 minutes after the deadline will NOT be considered at all!
Grading: There are two methods to determine your course grade:
- Method 1: 20% Homework, 10% Matlab, 40% Quizzes, 30% Exam 3
- Method 2: 15% Homework, 10% Matlab, 30% Three Best Quizzes, 45% Exam 3
Your grade will be computed using both methods and then the better grade will be used. After your weighted average is calculated, letter grades will be assigned based on the standard grading scale:

Note on MATLAB grades: There are four MATLAB assignments and one MATLAB quiz. The breakdown of the 10% matlab portion is 6% for matlab hw and 4% for Matlab quiz.
There will be no curve, but we may adjust the scale to be more lenient (depending on the performance of the class). While we may adjust the scale to be more lenient, we guarantee that the grade corresponding to a given percentage will not be lower than specified by the above scale.
No extra credit will be given in this class.
MATLAB Assignments: The MATLAB assignments are a required part of the course. The assignments, DUE DATES, and instructions on how to submit the assignments can be found on the Math 20D MATLAB webpage. There will be MATLAB tutors available to help you with your assignments.
The MATLAB Quiz: There will be a MATLAB quiz given at the end of the quarter.If you are unable to make the scheduled time, you will be able to schedule an alternate time online. See the Math 20D MATLAB webpage for more information.
Gradescope: Exam grading will be done using an online tool called Gradescope (https://gradescope.com/). Exams will be scanned and uploaded to Gradescope and will be graded within it. As a consequence, exams will not be returned to the students. Instead, a digital version of your exams will be made available after the grading has been completed. An email will be sent from Gradescope when the exams are made available.
Regrades: Regrade requests will be made using the built-in regrade request feature in Gradescope. There will be a limited window of time (3 days) after the exams are made available during which the regrade request feature will be active. This time window will be announced when the exam (quiz) scores are released to the students.
Academic Dishonesty: Academic dishonesty is considered a serious offense at UCSD. Students caught cheating will face an administrative sanction which may include suspension or expulsion from the university. It is in your best interest to maintain your academic integrity.
