Homework

There are two types of homework assignments in this course, online homework (which will be graded) and pen-and-paper textbook homework (which will not be graded).

Online Homework

Online homework will be done using WebAssign. WebAssign can be accessed from within TritonEd under "Tools".
If you enrolled after the first day of classes, it might take a day or two before you make it into the system.

Access Codes:  To get an access code for WebAssign, you can either (1) purchase the textbook from the UCSD Bookstore, which comes bundled with a multi-term WebAssign access code, or (2) purchase ELECTRONIC ONLY access from the WebAssign website (after first logging in through TritonEd). If you already have a multi-term access code (because you took Math 20A last quarter, for example) then you may use the same code. If it does not work automatically, you may need to contact Customer Support.

Logging In:  Log into WebAssign from TritonEd. Select "Access WebAssign" either directly from the course menu or by first selecting "Tools". The first time you access WebAssign for this class, you will be asked to login to a Cengage account if you have one, or to create a Cengage account if you do not already have one. (Cengage is the company that owns WebAssign.) Normally, you will only have to log into your Cengage account the first time you access WebAssign for a course. (If you take another class using WebAssign, you should link it to the same Cengage account.)

For subsequent logins, you can either login to TritonEd and select "Access WebAssign", or you can login with your Cengage account at www.webassign.net. The top right corner of the WebAssign screen should show your account as "Welcome, username::app-173@ucsd" rather than "username@ucsd.edu". When you logout of WebAssign, it goes to WebAssign's direct login screen, instead of bringing you back to TritonEd. Just close the window.

Trouble Loggin In:  If you have trouble logging into WebAssign, contact WebAssign Student Support

Syllabus Quiz:  The Syllabus Quiz is posted in WebAssign. It has 10 question, each one multiple choice or True/False. You have one attempt per question. The quiz is "open syllabus," so you may have the syllabus open when you take the quiz. The Syllabus Quiz is due on the Friday of Week 2 and will be counted towards your homework grade. (One point per question for a total of ten points.)

Due Dates:  Online homework due dates are subject to change based on variations in course schedule or technological issues. All online homework assignments are due at 11:00 P.M., unless specified otherwise.

Late Submissions:  It is possible to request an automatic extension of the due date, but only for 1 day. Late submissions earn a maximum of 80% of their total score. (This penalty applies only to exercises submitted after the due date and not to those already submitted before the due date.)

Homework Score:  The maximum homework score is 90% of the total number of points available in WebAssign. For example, if there are 200 points available in WebAssign, then the maximum possible homework score for the class is 180 points. Thus, if your score in WebAssign is X points, then your homework score for the class will be the minimum of X/180 and 180/180. (So it is not possible to get a course homework score above 100%, even though it is possible to earn more than 100% of the points.)

Textbook Homework

These assignments will not be turned in and will be not graded; however, certain exam questions are based on textbook homework problems, so understanding the solutions to these problems should help you perform better on the exams. This page is subject to revision during the term. Please check regularly for updates. (Last updated 03 Dec 2018)

Homework Zero (Review)     (No due date; textbook exercises only)
  • Section 5.2:   7, 9, 13, 14, 15, 16, 23, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 55, 56, 57, 58, 65, 71
  • Section 5.3:   3, 7, 25, 27, 37, 45, 49, 55, 69, 71
  • Section 5.4:   4, 9, 21, 23, 25, 33, 37, 43, 47, 55, 59
  • Section 5.5:   5, 17, 23, 28, 29, 33, 39, 40, 41

Reading: Sections 5.2-5.5. These sections were covered in Math 20A, and consequently this is review. Mathematics builds on previous concepts, and without a good understanding of these sections, you will struggle with the remainder of the course.

Homework 1     (Online HW due Friday, Oct 12)
  • Section 5.6:  7, 11
  • Section 5.7:  15, 19, 25, 27, 33, 41, 51, 71, 76, 77, 87, 91, 101, 102, 103, 104
      Challenge Problems: 42, 73

Reading: Sections 5.6-5.7. Note that there are many exercises for Section 5.7. Substitution is one of the most basic and most useful methods available for evaluating integrals. It is important that you become well-versed in its use and a good way to do that is by doing as many exercises as possible.

Homework 2     (Online HW due Thu, Oct 18)
  • Section 6.1:  1, 3, 9, 17, 19, 21, 33, 41, 43, 53
  • Section 6.2:  6, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 43, 49
Note: Skip "Density" and "Flow Rate" (pp. 343-345)
  • Section 6.3:  9, 13, 15, 19, 25, 27, 31, 45, 49

Reading: Sections 6.1-6.3. You may skip "Density" and "Flow Rate " in Section 6.2.

Homework 3     (Online HW due Thu, Oct 25)
  • Section 7.1:  9, 11, 13, 15, 21, 23, 25, 35, 45, 49, 51
      Challenge Problems: 77, 89
  • Section 11.3:  7, 8, 9, 10, 13, 15, 17, 19, 29, 37, 39, 41

Note: Skip "Arc Length" (p. 606)

Reading: Sections 11.3-11.4 and Section 7.1. The topic of Section 7.1 ("Integration by Parts") is the "other basic method" for evaluating integrals. Make sure you are comfortable using it, because you will see it again and again in your mathematics courses.
