Card Guessing After a Shelf Shuffle
Abstract:
The shelf-shuffle was introduced by Diaconis, Fulman, and Holmes in 2013 as a model for a certain type of casino card shuffling machine. In this talk, we will survey recent progress on the analysis of complete-feedback card guessing after a shelf-shuffle. Our results in the single-shelf case include optimal strategies in symmetric and asymmetric regimes, as well as a unified study of the number of correct guesses, where central limit theorems and large deviations are obtained. This is collaborative work with Markus Kuba and Raghavendra Tripathi. We will conclude by discussing Congyi Luo’s breakthrough work from this September on the optimal strategy in the general case.
