Final: December 13 at 11:30am in Warren Lecture Hall 2001. The schedule of classes has the most up-to-date information.
Topics covered. Practice final. See below for more details.

Homework: Homework is due at 5pm on Fridays, to be submitted on Gradescope. If you are enrolled in the class, you should already have access to the class page (check your email for a link). Let me know if you have any issues accessing the page or uploading your homework.

Late homework will not be graded. You will be expected to show your working, unless otherwise stated (this helps us evaluate your understanding of the material, and allows us to give partial credit for incorrect solutions).

In this course, most of what you learn (and retain) will be a side effect of doing the homework problems. As such, we strongly encourage you to write your own solutions. However, you are welcome to discuss the problems with classmates if you feel it will improve your understanding (and enjoyment) of the material. If you get stuck, feel free to ask for help in discussion or office hours. We are here to help!

UCSD offers supplemental instruction (SI), drop-in tutoring and workshops for this course. The SI leader for this class is Nick Kopp (nkopp@ucsd.edu). His sessions will be on TTh at 2-3pm in TLC 1505 and Su at 3-4pm in Center Hall 316.

Piazza is a website where you can ask questions and see answers posted by us or your fellow classmates. Wolfram Alpha will help you visualise functions and check your answers, but try to avoid using it to solve the homework for you. Khan Academy has video lectures which can be used to supplement the lectures and textbook.

The problems below can be found in the textbook. Each problem set will focus on the lecture material from the previous week, so you can work on it over the weekend (and Monday/Tuesday), then ask about any difficulties you had in discussion. If you would like extra help, you can attend office hours or ask on Piazza. The textbook contains solutions to the odd-numbered exercises, most of which are similar to the following (even-numbered) problem (but you should think about the exercise for at least a few minutes before turning to these).

HW1 (due October 5):
 1.2: 6, 18, 30, 48, 52
 1.3: 6, 10, 12, 14, 20, 28, 32, 42, 44
Just for fun: 61 in §1.2

For homework 1, questions 52 from §1.2 and 12 & 32 from §1.3 were graded. Two points were given for answers with correct reasoning, even if you made a few minor arithmetic errors. One point was given for answers which were incomplete, or mixed correct and incorrect reasoning, or made too many small errors. No points were given for incorrect or absent reasoning, even if the final answer was correct.

The remaining 4 points were for attempting the other questions, i.e. for each question you did not (seriously) attempt, your total score dropped by 1 (up to a maximum of -4). We did not check whether these answers were correct; you should check them online or in discussion if you're not sure.

HW2 (due October 12):
 2.1: 4, 8, 12, 16, 26, 30
 2.2: 4, 10, 14, 26, 40
 2.3: 18, 28, 30, 46
 3.1: 2, 6, 22, 26, 48, 60, 68
 (Optional) 56 in §2.2

Check out the MDTP diagnostic assessment. Taking this will be worth 1 bonus point towards your homework 2 score (e.g. you can bump a 9/10 up to 10/10, but if you plan on scoring 10/10 you do not need to take it). Apart from this, the outcome of the test will not affect your 3C grade. It should be taken before October 14. If you missed it in class, you can send me an email to ask for the password.

Exercises 10 from §2.2 and 30 & 46 from §2.3 were graded. The scoring was the same as for the homework 1.

HW3 (due October 19):
 3.2: 4, 8, 12, 20, 26, 34, 50
 3.3: 12, 14, 18, 26, 32, 36, 40,
 3.4: 2, 4, 6, 8, 14, 20, 26, 30, 32, 36
 (Optional) 49 in §3.4
For 26 in §3.4, you will probably need to use a calculator or computer.

Midterm 1 (October 22):
This will cover Chapters 1-3 of the textbook. We skipped §2.4 and part of §2.3. I made a list of the material you need to know. You should not need a calculator or any notes for the test. The following practice midterm may help you prepare for the real thing. You might find these solutions helpful when studying.

HW4 (due October 26):
 3.5: 8, 10, 12, 14
 4.1: 10, 18, 38, 64
 4.2: 6, 14, 24, 26

HW5 (due November 2):
 4.2: 20, 22, 30, 32, 42, 44, 47
 4.3: 2, 8, 12, 26, 30, 32, 34, 38, 42,
 5.1: 4, 14, 18, 30, 34, 50, 58, 66, 72
 (Optional) 70 & 71 in §4.2 and 50 in §4.3

HW6 (due November 9):
 5.2: 2, 4, 6, 16, 18, 20, 24, 28, 36, 40, 52, 62, 104
 5.3: 2, 4, 8, 12, 28, 36, 44, 48
 5.4: 4, 6, 8, 12, 14, 16, 20, 24
 6.1: 6, 8, 12, 20, 24, 46, 48, 50

Midterm 2 (November 14)
This will cover Chapters 1-7 of the textbook. We skipped §2.4, §4.4, §6.2, §7.3, §7.4 and part of §2.3. I made a list of the material you need to know (new stuff is in bold, but the midterm will also cover (some) old stuff). This time you can bring a single page of notes, but still no calculators. The following practice midterm may help you prepare for the real thing. You might find these solutions helpful when studying.

HW7 (due November 16):
 6.3: 2, 4, 6, 16
 7.1: 10, 14, 16
 7.2: 6, 8, 10, 14

HW8 (due December 3):
 9.1: 2, 6, 10, 12, 26, 34, 36, 40, 42, 46
 9.2: 4, 8, 10, 16, 20, 26, 32, 42, 46
 9.3: 2, 4, 8, 12, 14, 18, 22, 24, 28
 9.4: 2, 8, 10, 14, 18, 22, 28, 32, 36
 9.5: 2, 6, 10, 22, 34, 42, 50, 58, 70, 82, 86

HW9 (due December 7):
 9.6: 8, 12, 22, 28, 48
 10.1: 2, 4, 18, 24, 40
 10.2 6, 8, 18, 22, 32
 11.2 2, 6, 8, 14, 64

Final (December 13)
This will cover every chapter of the book except for 8. We skipped §2.4, §4.4, §6.2, §7.3, §7.4, §10.3, §10.6, §11.1, §11.3, §11.4, §11.5 and part of §2.3. Although we did end up covering §10.4 and §10.5, these will not appear on the final. I made a list of the material you need to know. You can bring a single page of notes, but still no calculators. The following practice final may help you prepare for the real thing.

Grading: Your final score will be calculated using one of the following options (whichever is higher):

Your lowest homework score will be ignored. Also, you must pass the final in order to pass the course. Since this is a preparatory course, there will be no curve. If your score is above 90%, 80%, or 70%, you can expect an A-, B-, or C- respectively.
